Florence + The Machine “Over the Love”

Green Light In My Eyes

When the announcement was made, that my beloved Florence + The Machine had fashioned a brand-new tune for Baz Luhrmann’s much-anticipated film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, the appropriate response had been to run around my home in a sporadic like fashion, screaming at the top of my lungs. When a swarm of new trailers for the film had been released, and we were graced with a short preview of the song, my one and only reply consisted of short incoherent babbles, mainly composed of words like, love and need, and now. As you can imagine, when a full-length preview for the track appeared only mere hours ago, my immediate response was to listen to the opulent anthem repeatedly, and to swiftly share it with all of you. You’re welcome. Over the Love is another Florence classic of grandiose perfection. With a luminous clarity to her voice, Florence melts seamlessly into Gatsby’s vogue world – the lyrics detailed with heavy influence from the original novel. Florence’s rare ability to speak directly to your soul allows this track to appear like the night sky, filled with fireworks and shimmering stars. The song surrounds you, holds you until you hear nothing but its echo in your mind. I’ll guarantee you’ll love it.

What do you think of Over the Love? How many times have you listened to it so far? Are you excited to hear any other songs from the soundtrack? Will you see The Great Gatsby? Have you read the novel? Want to confess your love-obsession with Florence + The Machine? Tell me in the comments!

Classic Movie Moment: The Man That Got Away

Never a New Love

It’s undeniable: the effortless passion embedded within each perfected lyric, within every intense wave of melody. The heart’s meaning is relative, universal. They form a perfect union; She of flesh and She of sound. The partnership between them is seamless, as if they are two souls masked as one – amplified by shadow, simplified by light. Her movements are fluid and impulsive. A smile or a sweep of hair. An extended hand – searching – longing for her forever-love. The man that got away.

It’s a scene without fault, the ideal. A song that is known, timeless. A classic movie moment so specific, so memorable, it has surpassed its origin and become an entity all its own. Judy Garland leaves us speechless, in a performance that will always have the ability to mark our cinema loving lives with an everlasting impression. Undoubtedly, one of the most unforgettable moments in all of movie history.

Press Play Friday: I Love the 90′s (Part 2)

Zig-A-Zig-Ah

You slide on your favorite pink flip-flops and walk out into the sunshine, avoiding the chalk art you drew the day before, simultaneously clipping your Walkman to the loop of your denim jeans. After placing the slightly worn headphones over your ears, you remove the cassette tape from your pocket and carefully place it into the predetermined gap, being sure to set it in the correct position – having experienced that all too common problem before. Holding the moderately sized device in your hand, you push the smooth, black, slighty raised rectangular button in the center of the console, impatiently waiting the few agonizing seconds it takes for the music to start. You hop on your bike and ride towards the school playground a few blocks away from the house, silently singing along to a chorus of Mmmbop, tapping your fingers against the handlebars. You immediately begin to get lost in the soft hum of the ride, the swift beat of the music. Eventually, wondering if anything will ever be as good as this moment, as this undeniable freedom. It’s isn’t until years later, you realize life is but a fleeting moment and you must savor each and every single smile, every single note . . . or start a blog so you can reminisce about 90′s music as much as you like and never have to apologize for it. You know, either one. It’s like that time you had so much fun talking about Nsync and No Doubt you wanted to do it again, and again, and again.

Movie Review: The Host

The Universe & U

This is how I see it. We spend years preoccupied with a series, constantly wishing they would select it for the big screen. Detailing lists; compiling scenes and particular components we absolutely want and don’t want. We debate casting decisions; obsess over initial snapshots and overdue theatrical trailers. We buy advance tickets; scout theatres. We do everything a dedicated fan would do.

The night of the premiere, we wait anxiously in our seats, giggling with anticipation, smiling throughout the preamble. Eventually, biting our lips when a favorite scene is done to our satisfaction; constantly dissecting every alteration, every similarity. Ultimately, we frown as the final credits roll, as we inherently remind ourselves the film is never as good as the novel.

I can tell you, I’ve been through this process many times, and frankly, it sucks. So much excitement and expectation is built up, the film never has a chance to prove itself. The Host was my surrender. I was going to go in, enjoy, and shut the hell up. Despite everything, I was not going to nitpick. Nope. Instead, I would observe as a true nonpartisan and cite no overly critical criticisms whatsoever.

Nah. Just kidding. Where would the fun in that be? [Warning, there be spoilers ahead!]

TV Rewind: The Vampire Diaries – “American Gothic”

Trust 101

Source: The Vampire Diaries Blood Falls

We’re in the home-stretch of the TVD season, with only a handful of episodes to go, with only a few more chances for them to right their wrongs. These past couple of weeks, TVD has improved its game, reminding us of the good old days with witty quips and mad (in a good way) story lines. Well, last night was no different. Although progress has been made, it still feels like they’re dragging their feet on the ground. This latest installment was an improvement, but I’m still waiting for the mayhem and gore. Where is it? Personally, I think we can sum up American Gothic in two words: Shirtless Klaus. I’m only kidding, of course. Beautiful Elijah will also do.

Download This! (Lyric Video Edition)

Video Killed the Radio Star

There’s this new thing that’s very popular in the music world. It’s called a lyric video, and it’s a music video that really isn’t a music video. Confusing, I know. Back in the old days, I’m sure we all remember, there was one video for one song. Now, it’s not uncommon for the latest tracks to have two or more video versions. In some cases, these lyric videos can be as equally entertaining as their elaborate, million-dollar counterparts. For example, I suggest you Download This!

Paramore – Still Into You

Thirty Seconds to Mars – Up In the Air

Justin Timberlake – Suit & Tie

Don’t forget I want YOUR music suggestions! You can Tweet, Facebook, or E-mail your suggestions to me. And you can always leave your song, artist, or album suggestions in the comments below!

What did you think of the featured songs and videos above? Are there any new albums you are looking forward to? Which songs and artists have you been listening to recently?

Once

A poetic love-song embedded between ostentatious bouquets of flowery verses. That’s what you’ve come to expect out of a poem, right? Once is that typical modern love story, but one that has gone terribly, terribly wrong. It’s more of a lyrical fairy tale than anything else, but in a severely twisted sort of way.

Stop by The Writer’s Room to find this poem, as well as my other stories. Plus, you can find a playlist of my musical influences HERE.

Happy Reading! :D

TV Rewind: The Vampire Diaries – “Because the Night”

Two’s Company. Three’s a Crowd.

Source: The Vampire Diaries Blood Falls

Throughout the course of last night’s episode, you couldn’t help but feel as if you were walking down a familiar road, a path that somehow had the possibility to lead towards home. We all know it’s a journey that is nowhere near complete, but it felt like TVD finally (at least, for the time being) made an effort to get back to basics, to what it does best. It felt as if we had received some sort of small compensation for the weeks we were left out in the cold, with no quality plot lines to keep us stuck to our seats. Although I can’t say it was that great, it held my interest and drove me to muster up, at least, some enthusiasm to make me yell at my TV – to actually make me care about what was happening on-screen. Considering that hasn’t happened in a while, I’d say we’re taking a step in the right direction. Rebekah may have played a part in the catalyst for that. She definitely had the best moment of the night. Her high standards have taught us all a valuable lesson in removing the most ungentlemanly like chaps from our sight. Regrettably, she never had the opportunity to meet Lexi, who could have used that move with Damon.

Never saw that little bombshell coming, did ya?

TV Rewind: The Vampire Diaries – “Bring It On”

Bad Girls

Source: The Vampire Diaries Blood Falls

Having lost her brother, her humanity and her home, you would expect Elena Gilbert to be a little bat-crap-crazy. However, acting like a robotic Katherine-Clone is not exactly what we had in mind. Elena was ruthless, cruel. She was homicidal, a she-devil! In all seriousness, we have to ask, what the hell, Elena? You are in crucial need of a time out. Go. Go stand in the corner while the rest of us talk about your abhorrent behavior. You heard me. This is a Spoiler Alert!
