TV Worth Watching: Downton Abbey

Upstairs, Downstairs

British dramas. Could there be anything better? Well, actually, now that I think about it, there is one thing better than an hour-long British drama. A period drama, hour-long, British. Speaking as someone who has a rather dominate addiction to them, I can assure you, I am in the right. Think about it. Think of the breakneck paced dialogue – ridiculously smart and eloquent – spoken in varying styles of the Queen’s English. Grand historic locations. Inordinate castles built on hundreds of acres of vibrant green grass and towering elder trees. How about the infamous streets of ol’ London Town? Splendid and posh. Lavish balls and ostentatious dinner parties. Lords and ladies dressed in elegant vintage costumes adorned with hand-fastened crystal, buttons, and beads. Quite frankly, I challenge you to find a more romantic, sublimely beautiful, compelling work of fiction than a complex televised character play set in the early 1900′s. It’s the Brit’s forte!

And yet, Downton Abbey is so much more than that. For those who aren’t closely acquainted with this specific type of drama, it’ll be somewhat hard to understand. Downton isn’t your typical formulated performance. Though sharing several esteemed characteristics with its well-known predecessors, Downton‘s strength is its distinctive characters and unwavering ability to remain progressive without fear – skillfully stunning or shocking the audience into many fits of incredibility. I’ve watched many Masterpiece Classics in my day, and I can truly say, this one is different; a show definitely worth watching.

A Very ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas

The Ice-Men Cometh

‘Twas one month before Christmas, when all through the house, not a sound could be heard, except the click of a mouse.

She shook as she heard The Doctor on screen. “The trailer is here!” She shrieked and she screamed.

Away to the computer, she flew like a flash. “I must tell them all about The Snowmen and fast!”

When, what to her wondering eyes should appear, but a new companion in some glitzy new gear.

And then, in a twinkling, she saw on the roof, the Tardis and the Doctor; he seemed quite aloof.

She yelped as she saw him, in spite of herself. He was witty and gruff, but his jolly old self.

His eyes, how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry! They watched the prequel together. “Oh, my.” She liked it, very.

With a wink of his eye and a twist of his head, soon gave her to know, she had nothing to dread.

She spoke not a word, but went straight to her work; wrote down the words and suddenly fangirls went berserk.

And then she heard him exclaim, ere he vanished out of sight, “Watch my special on Christmas. Eight o’clock on Christmas night!”

666 Park Avenue

Welcome to The Drake

As the new fall TV season begins, the time has come to finally make that all-important decision. What to watch? You already have your old favorites scheduled, picking off the ones that have failed to comply with your standards, and upgrading last years newbies who have proved themselves worthy to be added to your limited DVR space. Now is the time to experiment, sorting through those abundant previews and choosing two or three as potential must-sees. I admit, my own list is pretty scarce this time around, but one show did catch my attention. I submit for your approval, 666 Park Avenue. Based on the Gabriella Pierce novel of the same name, the story centers around Henry (Dave Annable) and Jane (Rachael Taylor) who have just signed on to manage The Drake, a mysterious but fashionable Upper East Side apartment building. The two are thrown into a world of power and money, revenge and sex, seemingly finding their place amongst the elite. Everything seems too good to be true . . . and it is. What they don’t know, is owners Gavin (Terry O’Quinn) and Olivia (Vanessa Williams) are hiding more than their fair share of supernatural secrets. 666 Park Avenue premieres September 30th at 9pm CET. Why don’t you take a look at the preview and tell me what you think. Will you be watching?

Will you watch 666 Park Avenue? What did you think of the trailer? Have you read the novel? Are there any other new shows you plan to watch? Tell me in the comments!

Classic TV Moment: Lucy Goes to Scotland

A McGillicuddy is Here!

Remember the days of old, when it was so easy to flip channels, finding one classic television show after another? The lineup, a perfect mixture of timeless classics and fast favorites? You might catch a rerun of Mister Ed or Bewitched, then immediately find an all new episode of Alf or Saved by the Bell waiting for you? Yeah, I remember . . . It was called the 90′s. There was always something to watch – a bit of classic television waiting to be discovered; a black and white masterpiece of comedic or dramatic brilliance. We don’t have it so easy nowadays. We have to plan rigorous search parties just to find that one half hour where I Dream of Jeannie is on. Frankly, it’s not fair. I want to watch Night Court again, darn it! Classic TV has been the odd man out for too long. Where are the Mr. Belvedere marathons? The Odd Couple weekends? The networks have been making progress, I admit, with those two short hours of Doug they play in the middle of the night. They even have an all classic channel too, if you know where to look.

The easy accessibility is gone. Reality TV has taken over and I’m done with it. If they won’t bring back classic TV, then I will. I want to talk about shows of yesteryear, debate and obsess. I want to have a place where we can discuss our favorite classic TV moments (Can you see where I’m going with this?). I want to talk about I Love Lucy . . .

It’s well-known that this is my all-time favorite Lucy episode. It’s easy to see why. The episode is filled with ample amounts of comedic style and flair, including its melodic musical score. Did I say musical score? Yes, I did. In the past, Ricky has gone to great lengths to prevent Lucy from singing, but this time, Lucy is calling the shots. While traveling through Europe, Lucy hopes to track down her ancestors in Scotland, but alas, there is no time in the schedule to do so. One night, Lucy begins to dream. In the small town of Kildoonan, Lucy is welcomed with eager cheers and joyous melodies, unaware as to why the villagers are so relieved to see a McGillicuddy. Scotty MacCardo (Ricky in a kilt) is the one to set the record straight. They’re going to feed Lucy to the terrible two-headed dragon (Fred & Ethel)! Scotty vows to keep Lucy from her gruesome fate, but will he be able to save her in time? “I’m In Love with a Dragon’s Dinner (Ha!) is just one of the songs featured in the melodrama.

What did you think of this classic TV moment? Have you seen Lucy Goes to Scotland? What’s your favorite scene? Favorite song? What’s your favorite I Love Lucy episode? Do you have your own favorite classic TV moment you want to share? Tell me in the comments!

TV Worth Watching: Being Human

Next to Normal

What happens when a werewolf, a ghost, and a vampire all live under the same roof, in a well-worn flat in Boston? No, this is not the initial makings of a humorous quip with a worn out punch-line. You should know me better than that. This is the actually the premise for the SyFy network’s reimagined take on the supernatural drama, Being Human. I’m sure most of you have already heard of or seen the original BBC version of this noteworthy series, as it is still very much alive, moving on to its fifth season. But have any of you taken the time to survey its American counterpart? Yep, that’s what I thought. Though the similarities between the two shows were initially substantial, creator Jeremy Carver (of Supernatural fame) has reshaped the newer series into something worth watching, creating contrasting story arcs for a corresponding series.

Premiering in early January 2011, Being Human introduced us to a trio of supernatural characters all striving for the same goal. Much like their contemporary peers, the search for humanity is their primary motivation. The Vampire, Aidan (Saw Witwer). Initially struggling to tame his natural instincts – swiftly slugging down mass quantities of hospital blood bags – like some other vampires we know, Aidan is the archetypal monster trying to do good. Josh (Sam Huntington), the werewolf, battles most with what he is. Having to abandon his old life for a punishing new existence, Josh finds his only solace in having Aidan as a friend. The two rely on each other, dedicating their strength and time to finding their humanity, longing for it. When Sally (Meaghan Rath) enters the picture, their search for normal complicates their day-to-day lives even further. You see, Sally is a ghost; looking for answers, hoping to find peace after death. Of course, it isn’t that easy. Attempting to be human, is much more difficult than it seems.

TV Worth Watching: Lost Girl

It’s a Fae, Fae World

If there is one thing I know we all love, it’s a supernatural drama. Mystery. Romance. Weird creatures with complicated revenge plots. It’s all relative to a world of fantasy; science-fiction at its best. We connect with these places of make-believe to escape our everyday routines, to travel into the mystical unknown for the occasional forty to fifty minutes – depending on how many monotonous commercials we have to endure. We visit these places to extract our daily dose of entertainment; to nerd-out over dialogue and to spend some time with our favorite characters. The supernatural drama is a predominant part of contemporary literary fiction, but also plays a substantial role in the diverse world of modern television. Almost every channel has one – a cast of characters living and surviving in a world where monsters are literally hiding under the bed. We all have our favorites; shows that drive your imagination, maybe eliciting a few superhuman daydreams in the process. Yet every season, there is another new batch of exciting shows ready to be programmed into our DVR’s. With so many out there, how is it possible to know exactly which ones to watch? Well, that’s where I come in. I am proud to introduce you to a new series all about shows you should be watching, but hopefully, some of you all ready love. While this is the time most shows are wrapping up their seasons, I think this is the perfect opportunity to give you the inside 411 on a few that are definitely worth watching. For those interested: No, not all shows will be about the supernatural. I will try to bring as many various genres to the table as I can, but if one or three slip in there, just go with it. By the time we’re through, I genuinely expect your Netflix queue to be full, overflowing with soon-to-be favorites.

Let us begin our journey, here. Lost GirlCombine a sexy succubus, a heated love-triangle (I love those), add a best friend (the human variety, of course); throw in a bitter clash between two magical races, one handsome leading man, a few mythical creatures; top it all off with a dash of comedy, and you have the makings of a sure-fire hit. Seriously, what’s not to like? Though, admit it, I had you at succubus.

Supernatural Season 6 . . . It’s Here

Are you ready?

Source: Google Images

It’s here. It’s finally here. The sixth season of Supernatural has arrived and will soon be on our television screens. Thank Chuck. In all honesty, I’m trying to be calm, but it isn’t working very well. It doesn’t help that there has been almost every great episode of Supernatural on my TV since 11 o’clock last night. There is no better way to wake up in the morning than hearing Renegade by Styx from the episode “Nightshifter.” Alright, I’ll admit it. I might have woken up a little earlier than that. I just love the bromance between Ronald and Dean.

But who cares about old episodes? The new season is starting tonight! Sam is back, from hell. Dean is settled down (NO!). Castiel is a big shot upstairs. I have a feeling that this first episode is going to be riddled with “What the?” moments. I really don’t know what to expect (I don’t read major spoilers) and that is the way I like it.

So after two years of heavy mythology, not-so-nice angels (Zacharia), demons, an impending apocalypse, Crowley, and Lucifer, what can we expect? We know that the monster of the week formula is returning, but I don’t think it’s going to be the same. The tables have turned. Dean is the one resisting the hunter life and Sam is embracing it. Can someone say more brother drama? I love Dean and Sam, but seriously? Those boys just need to hug it out. That is my only expectation for the season. I just want them to hug it out . . . and be shirtless.

Supernatural Season 6 premieres TONIGHT (September 24th) on the CW at 8pm CT.

Are you excited about the season premiere tonight? What do you hope will happen? Tell me in the comments!

Sunday Night TV: What Just Happened?

Um . . . what just happened?

Source: Photobucket

My DVR was in full force last night; True Blood, Mad Men, and the VMA’s. So much television and so little time. I think I have a TV hangover. My head hurts. I feel a little queasy. And the same thought keeps running through my mind: What the BLEEP?

I think that is the appropriate definition of last nights TV watching experience. What the BLEEP? I didn’t know you could cram such a large amount of WTF? moments into one single night of television. While its spread between three shows, that is a large amount of considerable questions that need answering. Now, I don’t want to get into a full recap of Mad Men and True Blood because I haven’t done one on either show all season. But, we definitely need to talk about some of the most memorable WTF? moments of last night (Warning! Spoiler Alert!).

1. Don Draper: Voice Over Actor?: A huge downside to last nights episode entitled “The Summer Man,” was the unwanted addition of a Don Draper voice over. Getting inside a characters head on Mad Men usually consists of heavy flashbacks or long silenced stares, not cheesy voice overs that remind you of crappy movies. The newly sober Draper, writing in his journal is extremely hilarious on its own, but adding the voice of Jon Hamm doesn’t make it better. After last weeks almost perfect episode, I don’t understand how the show could hit this low-level. Even though the new Don Draper is very appealing, his newly found writing exploits are not.

2. But Beeel . . . : I don’t know what was more of a WTF? moment, Bill Compton admitting that he hired the Rattrays (Season 1) to beat the hell out of Sookie just so she could taste his blood, him working for Queen Sophie Ann (We knew this in previous episodes, but not to this extent), Russell (Dear special effects guys, thank you for grossing me out with that burnt skin, flaking thing for the whole episode) getting cement shoes, Sam shooting his brother, Eric almost having cement shoes, all thanks to Bill, Sookie leaving with the fairies, or Alan Ball telling us how awesome next season is going to be (Reassuring us after the almost boring finale?) Yes. I said boring. It was kind of a let down. How many loose ends were there? I lost count.

3. I didn’t know they still played videos . . . Oh wait, they don’t: This years MTV Video Music Awards almost played out like a huge commercial. There was hardly any awards given out, or should I say, hardly any awards given out to people who were not Lady Gaga. Chelsea Handler tried to do the best with what she was given, which was a whole pile of nothing. And 98% of the performances were egotistical dance-offs with only lip syncing to entertain the audience. I might be a little biased, but the highlight of the night was when Florence + The Machine killed it with her performance of her hit song “Dog Days Are Over” (Without lip syncing). At least we have some good memories, like meat dress, hot tub, and Kanye (Insert sarcasm tag here).

I bet this sounds like a whole bunch of negative. Well, if you’re negative you might see it that way. But, I see it as one night of very entertaining television.

See you tomorrow! – Kim

Clarissa Explains . . . Why I Miss 90′s Television

Hey. Dude. I Double Dare You Not To Love This.

Source: Google Images

Grab your jelly shoes and your Spice Girls cassette tape, we’re going back in time!

I miss you 90′s T.V. I miss not waking up to “Swiper, no swiping. Swiper, no swiping” after falling asleep to Nick At Nite. I miss watching Saturday Morning T.V that didn’t consist of That’s So Raven reruns and Power Rangers spin-offs. I miss quality children’s programming, like CatDog, Hey Arnold!, Tiny Toon Adventures, and Muppet Babies. So, where did you go? I know of several channels that play only reruns, but where is your channel? Where is the channel dedicated to the awesome power of 90′s T.V? You know if I had my own channel dedicated to 90′s T.V . . . Well, it would look a little something like this:

First of all, on this channel there are no commercials, so never mind thinking you’re going to get a baby in a rolly chair chasing a dog through a house. It’s out of the question. From 5am to 11am we cater to the younger generation. We begin with Lamb Chop’s Play Along with her friends Hush Puppy and Charlie Horse . . .“This is the song that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friend” . . . Yes, we get it Shari. Then we move along to Allegra’s Window. Puppets, people. Puppets. After that, a ride in The Magic School Bus with Ms. Frizzle. We do like to learn here, too. Maybe then, we go to The Big Comfy Couch or Shining Time Station (Either George Carlin or Ringo era). And of course, a little known gem, Under The Umbrella Tree. But, how can we not forget, a childhood favorite: Sharon, Lois, and Bram (Skinnamarink . . . Oh, sorry). To wrap it all up we end with The Gummi Bears, Kids Incorporated, M.M.C, Kidsongs, and Bear In The Big Blue House. He’s a huge, adorable, talking bear. How can you not love him?
