Florence + The Machine “Lover to Lover”

 Fire & Water

I’ve been losing sleep. I’ve been keeping myself awake. I’ve been wandering the streets for days and days, and days. Going from row to row, bed to bed, lover to lover, and black to red. But I believe. I believe . . . there’s no salvation for me now; no space among the clouds. And I feel I’m heading down, but that’s alright. That’s alright!

And I’ve been taking chances. I’ve been setting myself up for the fall. And I’ve been keeping secrets from my heart and from my soul. Going from row to row, bed to bed, lover to lover, and black to red. But I believe. I believe . . . there’s no salvation for me now; no space among the clouds. And I feel I’m heading down, but that’s alright. That’s alright!

Artist of the Month: Florence + The Machine

“Making music, it’s such a personal thing. You’re always making music; you’re making music that pleases you, and you kind of think, you know, ‘who the f**k else would listen to this?’ And so it’s really amazing to me how many people have taken it so to heart.” – Florence Welch

I guess it was inevitable, that we’d end up here, dedicating an entire month to the one and only, Florence + The Machine. We have met before, haven’t we? You know of my complete and utter devotion, some might say, obsession with the beautiful songstress Florence Welch and her flawless hymns? Yes, I thought so. It’s hardly a secret, given the circumstances. How many Florence posts are we at now? I’ve lost count. When I thought about composing a second edition of Press Play: Artist of the Month, I debated posting another lengthy love-letter to my beloved. There are only so many ways to accurately word the magical power Florence + The Machine possess. Then I completely chucked that thought out the window, because it was incredibly inaccurate. My ability to illustrate the melodious and lyrical magnetism seen in every Florence song is endless. I’m a fangirl. It’s what I do.

Press Play Friday: All-Stars

The Best of . . .

As BLOGAVERSARY week comes to a close, I thought for today’s Press Play it would be nice to look back at a few of our favorite featured artists from the past two years. Many talented musicians have taken the spotlight since the segment’s introduction – which featured Mumford & Sons; singer/songwriters, Pop stars, rockers, indie-alternative groups. The selection has been vast and varied. It has been a place that has introduced you to up & coming artists, fan favorites, and previous unknowns. I hope to continue that tradition, bringing you even more new artists and fresh music for your lovely ears to devour. My music obsession knows no bounds and it won’t be long (Next week, actually) until you’ll have another song or album to download; another artist to discover. Press Play has been and will always be a home for all music lovers.

Oh, look. It’s Florence + The Machine. You’re not surprised, are you? You shouldn’t be, seeing as I’m kinda (a lot) obsessed with this band and have frequently posted about the magical awesomeness they possess. “You want to keep Florence in your pocket and have her sing you lullabies. Or maybe, that’s just me?” (Ceremonials – Album Review, 11/8/11).

Florence + The Machine “Spectrum”

Say My Name

Here we are again. You know I just can’t help myself when it comes to our favorite redheaded songbird. This time, Florence is back with another visual adventure – defining the next hit-single off of Ceremonials. We’ve come to expect the usual imaginative, out of the box musical spectacular when it comes to Florence’s styled music videos, and I can assure you, this time is no different. Spectrum begins with ease; Florence’s stunning look intensified by sharp cuts to her electric auburn hair. Fiery color. Sharp reflections of light. As the song gains momentum, our songstress is encircled by an assembly of ballet dancers swaying to the song’s fierce sounds. Florence’s moves are grandiose, larger than life. She is a disco queen. She rises from the cool blue water like a sea goddess. She even has her own Mini Me! The visual accompaniment to the signature dance-track is complete with a rainbow of bright tones, theatrical choreography, and the slightest bit of the risqué. The final scene brings Florence to her knees, crawling toward us, closing the sensational power-anthem. I always seem to find myself wondering what it is I exactly watched after each of these unique performances from Flo, but by the end, I can’t help but be wonderstruck by the originality of the piece. You will love Spectrum for the song, obviously, but will be enchanted by the video’s fun, quirky nature. Take a look, my friends; observe the Flo in her natural habitat. Tell me what you think.

Florence + The Machine “No Light, No Light”

“You want a revelation, some kind of resolution”

Florence Welch sways above the New York City backdrop – wind gliding through her auburn hair – as a chorus of Catholic school children accompany her melodic voice. All the while, the candles flicker and dim, while a voodoo priest dances to the relentless drum beat of No Light, No Light. Our musical songstress takes flight, fleeing her demons. God. Religion. Love. Death.“You want a revelation. You want to get it right.” Florence seemingly jumps from her heavenly perch; falling – begging for someone to catch her. Breaking the glass ceiling, she settles in the arms of the choir. A soft caress. A kiss. A whisper. Florence’s eyes open to her savior, her lover. We expect nothing less than the usual eccentric storytelling we receive from every Florence + The Machine music video, and No Light, No Light is no different. The visual metaphors spill into every crevice of the expressive picture, hiding images for you to catch and decipher. A woman finding a skeptical romance in the arms of her lover? A lost soul, running away from heartache? There are so many perceptions and images voicing their words in this visually engaging video, that it takes at least a couple of views to understand and appreciate the presented artwork. I think all of you Florence Fans will undoubtedly recognize and love the newest addition to the group; finding the artistic sights of the video Flo-worthy. Take a gander, friends. Tell me what you think of the latest from Ceremonials.

What did you think of the ‘No Light, No Light’ music video? What’s your favorite scene? Love the song? What is your favorite track on Ceremonials? Tell me in the comments!

Album Review: Florence + The Machine – Ceremonials

“And I did cartwheels in your honour. Dancing on tiptoes; my own secret ceremonials”

Source: Google Images

When you first sit down and listen to Ceremonials, there is a blissful moment when you realize you’re not in Kansas anymore. You’ve been transported to some strange and wonderful dreamlike location; where ghosts roam the streets, lovers embrace and break into song, and Florence Welch looks down upon you from her majestic tree. There is no other place like it. You want to be there. You want to keep Florence in your pocket and have her sing you lullabies. Or maybe, that’s just me?

With the follow-up to their 2009 debut album, Lungs, Florence + The Machine (once again) present us with a dazzling and strong record we will be talking about endlessly. Songstress, Florence Welch, explores the deepest of emotion with intense poetic lyrics and her passionate, powerful voice. Alongside, The Machine create a vigorous performance, giving life to the each and every song.

Ceremonials is a delightful departure from her first album, combining the best bits and pieces from what we loved so much about Lungs, and fusing those with something new and original. Nothing is as you expect. This album is a seamless puzzle of varied styles of music and voices, perfectly pieced together.
