Discovery Monday: TableTop

Game. On.

From the start of Kim the FanGirl, it has been my mission to introduce you to new things. Nerdy things. With Discovery Monday I’d set out to do just that. True, it’s been a while since we met at this particular forum, but now I’m back with something I think you’ll all enjoy very much. At one time or another, we all have participated in that age-old tradition of game night. Card games. Board games. Dice games. Games of skill. Games of pure entertainment. Our affinity for these games never falters, though the types of games change continually throughout childhood and into adulthood. As time goes on and we fall deeper into real-life responsibility, the time we dedicate to playing grows less and less. Soon we forget just how much fun and excitement was had on those dedicated nights. That’s why TableTop is so remarkable. It’s bringing back table top game play to the masses in the essential nerdy way. With Wil Wheaton (Yes, that Wil Wheaton) as our guide, we are introduced to new and different games built on strategy and stocked with amusement. Although the games featured can be somewhat intimidating and complicated, they are presented in a way that, I find, exceptionally fascinating. Wil Wheaton is an avid player with immense passion for the game, and every episode makes that abundantly clear. After watching, you’ll immediately want to scour Amazon, call up your friends, and start a weekly game night. From Geek & Sundry (The place where geek queen, Felicia Day hangs out), this is TableTop.

Discovery Monday: Supernatural

Lay down that salt ring, it’s Supernatural premiere week!

Source: Google Images

Whether you’re a fan, or soon will be (*wink*), there are only 4 more days until the season 6 premiere of Supernatural!

You’re free to fangirl now.

While it may be no surprise that I would dedicate a whole week to the season premiere of Supernatural, it is a surprise that there are still people not watching this amazing show. So for all you soon to be fans, for this Discovery Monday I’m going to let you in on the best secret in television since 2005. This is Supernatural. Cue the classic rock!

Premiering on September 13th (2005), and created by [Fearless Leader] Eric Kripke, Supernatural is the story of brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. Throughout this soon to be 6 year journey, we travel with the boys in their 1967 Chevy Impala across the country fighting monsters, demons, urban legends, and whatever other creepy, sometimes previously dead creatures they can find.

Sounds like the making of a serious drama. But, sometimes I don’t think that’s the case. Over the past 5 seasons of TV I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in my life. Of course there are plenty of rip-your-heart-out-cry-until-the-end-of-time moments. After all, it can’t be all rainbows and sunshine in the hunter world.

Supernatural is a cult classic. The characters are complex, well-written, and well-acted. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s entertaining, it has everything you want in a series. But, it’s more than just two guys hunting demons. The relationships are the real force behind the show. Bobby (Jim Beaver), Pretty-boy Angel Castiel (Misha Collins), and so much more take the show above and beyond.

Discovery Monday: John Green

We uncover the awesomeness of nerdfighter & author John Green for this Discovery Monday

I guess it’s not a surprise that John Green is one of my favorite people. See that quote at the top of the page? Yep. John Green.

He is the New York Times bestseller of Looking For Alaska, Abundance of Katherines, and Paper Towns, and has one of the most viewed YouTube channels in all of online video history. His most recent novel is Will Grayson, Will Grayson which he co-wrote with David Levithan.

John Green is an author that actually connects with his audience in more ways than one. He has taken advantage of the digital age we live in, by going out and communicating with his audience not just through his novels, but through social media. I think that if more new authors did things they way he does, than maybe we can get more people to read more often.

As an author, his novels are filled with a unique humor and sentiment that you have to read to understand. I really can’t tell you how he writes, because we all experience something different as we read through a characters eyes. But, I can say that as I first starting reading Abundance Of Katherines, I immediately pulled out a highlighter to keep track of his amazing quips and expressions. I never do that. I hate writing in books, it distracts me (We can talk about my weirdness, later).

His characters are realistic with realistic conversations in high school hallways and messy teenage boys rooms. He creates a depth to the characters that most writers fail to understand or do these days. John Green is definitely one of my favorite authors of all time. I find my self laughing out loud, then crying during and after I read his novels.

If you take only one author recommendation this year, make it John Green. This ad has been approved by Kim The FanGirl.

Wait! There’s More After The Cut!

Discovery Monday: A Very Potter Musical

For this Discovery Monday I let you in on the greatest non-secret on the internet

AVPM – Source: Photobucket

In 2009 a group of University of Michigan students had a revelation about Harry Potter, “The character Draco Malfoy is always picking on Harry’s best friend, Hermione. And just during the reading of it, we were like, Draco does he have a crush on her? We thought it was going to be a twist that Draco would have a crush on Hermione.”

Nick Lang continues, “This idea of a song just kind of came into our heads that was “I Feel Like I’m In Danger of Falling In Love with Hermione Granger.” And so that was the first idea, and then we were like this could be a whole musical. You could make a musical out of Harry Potter.” – via Michigan Radio

And so, A Very Potter Musical was born.

The original two-act play made its worldwide debut on YouTube in July. Now, a year after its debut, the musical has almost 2 million views. The play takes a different look into the world of Harry Potter (A hilarious look), while still paying respect to the original. The tons of pop culture references and amazing music make even the most musical-hater love this play. I can make you a promise. You will still be singing these catchy and “totally awesome” (You will get that AVPM reference later) songs a year after you see it.

I can not tell you how much I love A Very Potter Musical. It’s definitely made me love the books and the movies even more. It also has given me hours and hours of hilarious delight from the infinite AVPM references I can make in real life and while watching the movies. If you love Harry Potter, there’s no doubt in my mind that you will love this too (Maybe even more than the movies).

Now, I don’t want to say anymore, because I think that the joy of seeing the musical for the first time, is not knowing what you’re getting yourself into. So get yourselves “back to Hogwarts” (Another AVPM reference. I do that a lot).

See you on Wednesday! – Kim

The group of Michigan students now called Team Starkid/Starkid Productions have 2 more YouTube sensations under their belt, Little White Lie and M&MD and will soon have a third, A Very Potter Sequel. The sequel comes out . . . THURSDAY! That’s right, July 22!

I’ll be putting a AVPM/AVPS discussion on the blogs Facebook page so you can discuss all your favorite quotes and songs. And all this week I will be featuring Team Starkid on the blog so be prepared for total awesomeness!

Have you seen AVPM? Do you love Harry Potter? What is your favorite AVPM quote? Tell me in the comments!

For example, these nerds from The Nerdist Podcast (Like my segue?). My nerd soul mate, Chris Hardwick (who you can see on Web Soup and as a talking cow on Back At The Barnyard) co host’s with his friends Matt Mira and Jonah Ray on this ridiculously hilarious and awesome podcast.

Each week, a new celebrity, musician, comedian, or Muppet, join the trio in a side-splitting session of being nerdy. Guests have included: Joel McHale, Jon Hamm, ‘Weird’ Al Yankovic, The Muppet’s, Craig Ferguson, and from Mythbusters, Adam Savage (My favorite episode, so far).

The Podcast is a mix of comedic nerdisms and entertaining celebrity chat’s. It’s a must listen for nerds and non-nerds, as well.

Chris Hardwick is the perfect mix of comedian and nerd to send you on this journey into awesomeness. You can check out his stand-up at the front of the Live @ Largo episodes, as well as his musical talent as half of the comedic musical team Hard n’ Phirm.
