TV Rewind: Terriers – “Quid Pro Quo” & “Hail Mary”

There is a fork in the road

Source: Google Images

Hello, my dear friends. I’m back. Miss me? Of course you did. It’s been one long (too long) Thanksgiving break. I hope you enjoyed your over-sized turkey dinners, the company of friends and family, and sleepless nights reading fan-fiction; but now it’s back to business. We’ve got a lot of catching up to do. What better way to start, than by recapping not 1, but 2 episodes of Terriers.

Last week’s semi-spectacular episode (Quid Pro Quo) was the prelude to this weeks window-shattering finale. In fact, the whole season, beginning to end, was leading up to last night’s Hail Mary. I have to say, at a few points during the night, it seemed as if they were saying goodbye (No!). However, that last scene proved to be one hell of a cliff hanger. How could I not jump out of my seat in frustration and excitement? It was a perfect ending to a near-perfect season. While the fate of my new favorite TV show still hangs in the balance (I know what to ask Santa for this Christmas: a season 2 of Terriers), these past two episodes (Quid Pro Quo is my favorite episode of the season) kept proving what we knew all along. Terriers is one of the best shows on TV. Okay, enough of my gushing, let’s start this mega recap!

TV Rewind: Terriers – “Sins of the Past”

Season 1 Episode 11

Source: Google Images

The season is winding down on Terriers, and last nights flashback heavy episode was more than enough proof that this amazing show needs to be renewed for a second season. Do you hear me FX? Do you?

I’m going to say that Sins of the Past was the best of the season. I found myself curling up into a ball every time Drunk-Hank came on-screen. It was uncomfortable to watch our beloved Hank quickly and surely jump off the plank and into the deep end. However, it was great to see the clash between Sober-Hank and Drunk-Hank. It’s why I love the so so much. The storyline’s, the characters, the actors keep surprising me in ways most shows fail to do.

The episode began almost immediately after last week’s Britt & Kate fallout. Britt is packing up his things. He see’s one of Katie’s dresses and for a moment I thought (Did you?) he was going to rethink his decision of leaving. At least, I wished he would. Hank also wants Britt to reconsider and forgive Katie, but Britt refuses.

1. Hank: “Hey, I was thinking. You know what you should do?”

Britt: “What?”

Hank: “Put your s**t back. Go into the kitchen, whip up a sumptuous repast. Light some candles. Wait for the woman you love to come home, and have a great goddamn life.”

Britt: “You’re saying I should forgive her?”

Hank: “It’s implied. Just a suggestion.”

It’s safe to say that our boy doesn’t look his best. He’s depressed, though the thought of Katie’s betrayal is enough to make him downright mean. As soon as their about to leave, Katie walks in. Britt is aggressive and on the edge when Katie gives the ring back. Then when Britt tries to take Winston with him, Katie breaks down, conveying all her heartbreak and guilt on the loss of the dog (While it’s really all about Britt). It was a 5 tissue moment.

TV Rewind: Terriers – “Asunder”

Trouble

Source: Google Images

Can I get a slow clap for Terriers, please? Week after week, they keep knocking it out of the park. Last night was definitely a season best. Plus, he knows. Yes, Britt knows. Finally! That bubble burst right in his face and it was enough to break the toughest of hearts. On the other side of things, Hank. Oh, Hank. I was really worried about him at the end of the last episode, and Asunder was no different. He made it though, thankfully, with only minor emotional damage, and one broken nose. And it was all because of the case. What case? The case of the week, of course. Let’s hear about it. Okay. For those who’ve seen last nights amazing episode of Terriers, onwards and downwards. The rest of you . . . SPOILER ALERT!

It’s the day of Gretchen’s wedding, and Hank is trying to keep himself busy. He was uninvited after his little reconnaissance mission to gather info on Jason failed miserably. Recall Gretchen’s harsh words: “You’re the live grenade in my life.” Poor, Hank. After cleaning the gutters, taking out the trash, and having his allotted refill amount achieved and surpassed, Hank reassures Britt that he’s fine and it’s okay to go to Gretchen’s wedding. At his AA meeting, Hank tries to talk through his feelings. The wedding is bringing up bad thoughts for him, but he appears to be holding strong.

Later, he get’s a call from Britt who – thanks to an eager wedding guest and a glass of Merlot – is in the need for a new shirt. Britt want’s to steal one from Hank, but Hank has a better idea. “Hey why don’t I run one out to you? Save you some time?” He agrees to run down to the wedding and give Britt the new shirt. And this is the point when I started yelling “bad idea!” at my television screen. This is also the point when I realized that an explosion of admission is about to begin.

TV Rewind: Terriers – “Pimp Daddy”

Season 1 Episode 9

Source: HitFix

Dear Terriers. There’s so much to say about last nights episode. Humor. Sadness. Romance. Mystery. You continue to surprise me. The characters – the storylines increasing become stronger and more interesting. You’re a gift to the TV world. Yes, it’s true. You’re a gift. Don’t let anybody say you’re not. Keep up the good work.

On that note, let’s get this recap started. For those who’ve see last nights all new episode of Terriers, onwards and downwards. To the rest of you slow-pokes SPOILER ALERT!

As Hank started his recovery from his new gunshot wound, he continued to dream of happier times with Gretchen. In a sweet scene, Hank recalls a specific morning the two shared. The light breaks in from the window, he sings his own version of “(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons,” and entices Gretchen to make him breakfast. She flirts back and for a moment we see one of the only scenes where Hank is truly happy. It’s a strong contradiction to the way things are and the way they soon will be. Hank wakes up in bed alone and unwillingly starts his day.

Later, Hank receives a call he’s been waiting for. His jealousy over Jason (Gretchen’s soon-to be-husband) was and is at an all time high, and having a background check seemed like the right thing to do. Only, he wasn’t expecting (And neither were we) these results. When Jason was 15, he was accused of child molestation. Nothing became of the charges, but Hank needed to tell Gretchen More of My Recap After The Cut!. He shows her the file expecting one thing, but receiving another.

TV Rewind: Terriers – “Agua Caliente”

Season 1 Episode 8

Source: Google Images

In a strange turn of events, Britt and Hank teamed up with their former partners last night. While the dynamic duo are the real reason I watch the show, I have to admit, it was nice to see them out of their comfort zones.

The episode begins as Hank and Britt are doing some minor work serving a restraining order. As Hank follows the intended recipient, Britt is kidnapped by the drug cartel and taken to Tijuana. Hank enlists the help of Mark Gustafson to find his missing partner. Their relationship seems to have remained intact even after Hank left the police department – enough for Hank to joke with Mark’s wife, but not enough for Hank to tell him that he split up with Gretchen. Reluctantly, Gustafson agrees to help Hank recover Britt from Tijuana.

Meanwhile, Britt finds out the real reason behind his kidnapping. His old partner, Ray, had lost a very precious package of the cartel’s and told the scary drug dealers that Britt is the only person who could get it back, since he’s an expert thief. The package – incidentally filled with a large amount of cocaine – is being held at the local police department. It’s Britt and Ray’s job to get it back. Only, there’s a hitch. If Britt doesn’t bring the package back to them by a certain time, Katie will be killed by the cartel member following her.

In a classic switcheroo moment, Britt picks a fight with Ray at a bar. Things get heated, until the police show up – which was Britt’s (I’m assuming) plan all along. In the jail cell, Ray “recovers” a lock-pick and Britt heads out to find the package. One very easy retrieval later, Britt goes back to the cell to find Ray has punched out a cop and has stolen his uniform. Ray “escorts” Britt out and everything seems to be on track. However, it turns out not to be so easy. As the two proceed back to the warehouse where they were held, the scary drug dealers boss pop’s a bullet into their captors heads, leaving Britt with no hope to call off the henchman.

TV Rewind: Terriers – “Missing Persons”

Do you know who I am?

Source: HitFix

I’m going to keep saying this until more people start watching. “Terriers is one of the best shows on TV right now. You should watch it.” There I said it. It’s true. Seven episodes in, and Terriers keeps surprising me with these inventive storylines and characters. It’s not your typical formulated mystery show, and I am grateful for that. Last nights episode made us delve even deeper into the world of Hank and Britt. So fasten your seatbelts, it’s time to start this recap. And keep your tray tables and seats in the upright position because this is a  . . . SPOILER ALERT!

Case of the week:

Hank and Britt find a young amnesiac and try to discover who he is and why he has a strange feeling that he did something wrong. Britt is a bit underwhelmed at the idea of helping the kid, citing that there is only a small chance that they will get a reward. On the other hand, Hank is taking the case a bit too close to heart. Since the kid is experiencing the same symptoms that his sister Stephanie had when she was young (Running away/Memory loss), he will do anything to prevent the same situation from happening.

While going through the boys pockets, they find a mysterious looking pill. They take it to a pharmacist/Ice Cream salesman to figure out what it is. He tells him that the pill is for preventing malaria, but comes with a healthy dose of side effects, like memory loss, paranoia, delusion, anxiety . . . etc. Out of options, they take the I-don’t-know-who-I-am kid down to the police station, and to Detective Mark Gustafson. They fingerprint him, but when the kid see’s a bulletin on the wall he hits a cop and runs away.

TV Rewind: Terriers – “Ring-a-Ding-Ding”

Put a ring on it

Source: HitFix

So much drama last night. Hank and Gretchen. Hank and Britt. Britt and Kate. Kate and Hank. It was a character focused episode, and I couldn’t have been happier about it. It’s what the show needed to make us truly love these characters. I applaud thee. Terriers you may take your prize as the best new show of the season. Congratulations. Now, on to business. Where to begin? I suppose the beginning is always best (Psst . . . SPOILER ALERT!).

As Gretchen’s (Hank’s ex) new marriage approaches, the gang – Hank, Stephanie, Britt, and Kate – are all sipping cocktails and feeling awkward at her engagement party. Later Gretchen’s fiance Jason, confronts Hank. He knows that Hank is going to be in their lives. He just wants to let him now that their happy and nothing is going to stand in his way from marrying Gretchen (Uh. Oh).

Stephanie: “I’m Hank’s pity date, but we’re not sleeping together.”

As the merriment ensues, Britt steps away. He admits to Hank that he feels it’s time for him to ask Kate to marry him. Hank isn’t too thrilled with the idea, since he feels it would change his relationship with Britt.

Hank: (To Britt) “I haven’t seen you this way since we listened to Wuthering Heights on tape.”

Cue parallel story line (A.k.a The Case of the Week!). Hank and Britt are hired to retrieve a missing ring for a couple. The wife is sick and fears that she doesn’t have much time left, so she wants to give the ring to her son. Enter the sleazy husband, who give a false story, testimony, etc, for his wife’s benefit. He later tells Hank and Britt the real reason behind the missing ring: a mistress. The sleazy husband gave her the ring, thinking that they were going to be together after his wife died, but the mistress left him and took the ring with her. They find her at a hair salon, and not so skillfully get the information they were looking for. It seems she sold the ring to a street market, who then sold it to a tattooed-heavily pierced guy, who then sold it to a pot dealer, who then sold it to the woman who hired them in the first place. It’s confusing, I know. The truth was, that she didn’t even know the ring was missing until she found it at her dealers. She traced the ring back to the street market, where the woman told her about the mistress. She only told her sleazy husband it was missing to see how he would react. So why hire Hank and Britt? To get the name of the mistress and take her down. I kid. Actually, so she can change her will and get a divorce.

TV Rewind: Terriers – “Manifest Destiny”

“The case is closed. It’s closed.”

Source: Daemons TV

Last week’s episode of Terriers was a non-stop roller coaster ride, and this week was no different. We last left our friends Hank and Britt, as they were being taken into questioning by Detective Gustafson. Showing up at their door was rather unexpected, as they had the oh-so-dead body of Robert Lindus in their (Rather, Hank’s) bathtub. Last we saw, Stephanie (Who has recently been released from the psychiatric ward) was standing over the dead body as Hank and Britt left for the police station. Cliffhangers. I know. So annoying! Luckily, this week we begin almost exactly where we left off. And if you’ve forgotten . . . that means SPOILER ALERT!

During questioning (Lindus’ wife accused Hank and Britt of kidnapping her husband), Hanks confesses (Sort of) to being hired by Lindus to steal – money and incriminating documents – from his (Lindus’) own safe. Gustafson has no reason to hold them, so what time is it? Time to get rid of a dead body! Hank and Britt return home to find that Stephanie (Hank’s sister) has taken Robert Lindus’ body and stuck him in an ice bath: “He was starting to stink.” And by the way, I so called it. Didn’t I say that Stephanie was going to take care of the body? It might not be to the extent of “fully” taking care of the body, but she did. So, take that point and put it in my column.

In one of the best scenes of the night, Hank and Britt take Lindus, put him in his car (That Britt stole), and attempt to fake a car crash. Hank has some doubts, but decide that it’s the best thing to do. The next day, Hank tells Lindus’ wife that the kidnapping was a fake, in an attempt to keep her and her son safe. He tells her that there is a man in a tan suit, who is after her family (BTW, the man in the tan suit killed Hank’s friend Mickey). She swipes it off her shoulders, and tells them that he (Tan suit guy) has already paid a visit. He asked where Lindus was, but she didn’t know. Yet, she knew who did. Any guesses? Yep, that’s right. She told Tan Suit Guy that Hank and Britt knew where Lindus was. This. Can’t. Be. Good.

TV Rewind: Terriers – “Leave the dog, take the cannoli.”

First T.V recap of the season! Oh, yeah.

Source: Google Images

At first, Terriers might read as a buddy cop/Ace Ventura crossover: two out of box characters solving crimes, sometimes with a bulldog (I guess it would be too much if it were a terrier). While it seems like a good story for a situational comedy, Terriers is at root, a crime drama.

Centered around Hank (Grounded For Life‘s Donal Logue), a disgraced former alcoholic, former cop working as an unlicensed private investigator with his best friend, the immature and un-tactful, Britt (True Blood‘s Michael Raymond James). In its premiere episode, the two are asked to track down a former friends missing daughter, Eleanor. Going under the alias “The Gomez Brothers” (cheap sign attached to their car and everything), the so-called detectives who are obviously not opposed to theft or breaking and entering, are led to the home of Robert Landis. As Eleanor’s boss, and mega-million resort builder, he also tires to hire them to find his missing laborer, who seems to have stolen something from him. Of course, large amounts of well wanted cash are involved.

In the meantime, Hank is dealing with his soon-to-be-married ex-wife, who he may or may not still have feelings for and his former partner Mark Gustafson, who doesn’t quite agree with Hank’s day-to-day job. It’s hard not to recognize in this sort of Robin Hood story, that cops are bad. They basically point it out to you, after eluding to the fact that Hank was fired for standing up for what he believed in. While we can’t be sure at this point if this is true, or if the writers are trying to throw us off, I’ll bet that we’ll find out the real story a couple of episodes in.
