Trailer Talk: The World’s End

Last Call

FYI, this post has nothing to do with my unconventional and somewhat quirky crush on the super-duo, dream-team, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. Oh, who am I kidding? It totally does. Admit it, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz changed the way we view comedic features. We don’t have to settle for silly farces with idiotic plot lines or the standard formulated romantic comedies anymore. We can demand better. With Pegg and Wright’s influence, satires can be smart and witty, silly and creative, grisly and heartfelt. They’ve singlehandedly altered our expectations regarding comedic films. Which is why the announcement of The World’s End came with such considerable amounts of excitement and despair. This will be the third and final chapter in the team’s starter series. Although, I doubt this will be the last adventure we’ll see from a Pegg and Wright coupling. It would be a shame if it were.

Unsurprisingly, The World’s End trailer offers up a mix of familiarity and welcomed, cool insanity. In this tale of friendship and potential apocalyptic destruction, five mates reunite to repeat a failed pub crawl. However, find the town that they grew-up in changed considerably – being overrun by aliens and all. Pegg’s usual sweet and determined character has been exchanged for a darker, bad boy personality. Fences still aren’t easily jumped over and there are still many pints left to drink. Martin Freeman and Nick Frost also make return appearances for the film. It looks like another potential underground hit, though I don’t know how we could have ever expected anything less.

The World’s End begins August 23, 2013. Will you be there?

What did you think of the trailer? Will you see the movie? What was your favorite line? Favorite scene? Are you a Wright and Pegg fan? Which of their films are your favorite? Tell me in the comments!

Florence + The Machine “Over the Love”

Green Light In My Eyes

When the announcement was made, that my beloved Florence + The Machine had fashioned a brand-new tune for Baz Luhrmann’s much-anticipated film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, the appropriate response had been to run around my home in a sporadic like fashion, screaming at the top of my lungs. When a swarm of new trailers for the film had been released, and we were graced with a short preview of the song, my one and only reply consisted of short incoherent babbles, mainly composed of words like, love and need, and now. As you can imagine, when a full-length preview for the track appeared only mere hours ago, my immediate response was to listen to the opulent anthem repeatedly, and to swiftly share it with all of you. You’re welcome. Over the Love is another Florence classic of grandiose perfection. With a luminous clarity to her voice, Florence melts seamlessly into Gatsby’s vogue world – the lyrics detailed with heavy influence from the original novel. Florence’s rare ability to speak directly to your soul allows this track to appear like the night sky, filled with fireworks and shimmering stars. The song surrounds you, holds you until you hear nothing but its echo in your mind. I’ll guarantee you’ll love it.

What do you think of Over the Love? How many times have you listened to it so far? Are you excited to hear any other songs from the soundtrack? Will you see The Great Gatsby? Have you read the novel? Want to confess your love-obsession with Florence + The Machine? Tell me in the comments!

Classic Movie Moment: The Man That Got Away

Never a New Love

It’s undeniable: the effortless passion embedded within each perfected lyric, within every intense wave of melody. The heart’s meaning is relative, universal. They form a perfect union; She of flesh and She of sound. The partnership between them is seamless, as if they are two souls masked as one – amplified by shadow, simplified by light. Her movements are fluid and impulsive. A smile or a sweep of hair. An extended hand – searching – longing for her forever-love. The man that got away.

It’s a scene without fault, the ideal. A song that is known, timeless. A classic movie moment so specific, so memorable, it has surpassed its origin and become an entity all its own. Judy Garland leaves us speechless, in a performance that will always have the ability to mark our cinema loving lives with an everlasting impression. Undoubtedly, one of the most unforgettable moments in all of movie history.

Movie Review: The Host

The Universe & U

This is how I see it. We spend years preoccupied with a series, constantly wishing they would select it for the big screen. Detailing lists; compiling scenes and particular components we absolutely want and don’t want. We debate casting decisions; obsess over initial snapshots and overdue theatrical trailers. We buy advance tickets; scout theatres. We do everything a dedicated fan would do.

The night of the premiere, we wait anxiously in our seats, giggling with anticipation, smiling throughout the preamble. Eventually, biting our lips when a favorite scene is done to our satisfaction; constantly dissecting every alteration, every similarity. Ultimately, we frown as the final credits roll, as we inherently remind ourselves the film is never as good as the novel.

I can tell you, I’ve been through this process many times, and frankly, it sucks. So much excitement and expectation is built up, the film never has a chance to prove itself. The Host was my surrender. I was going to go in, enjoy, and shut the hell up. Despite everything, I was not going to nitpick. Nope. Instead, I would observe as a true nonpartisan and cite no overly critical criticisms whatsoever.

Nah. Just kidding. Where would the fun in that be? [Warning, there be spoilers ahead!]

Trailer Talk: Much Ado About Nothing

Whedon vs The Bard

Respectable nerds everywhere know that when you overhear the name Joss Whedon, or any other associated moniker, there is a predetermined selection of acceptable reactions. For instance, on the day Dollhouse was cancelled, the common reaction had everyone devouring a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and shedding a few irrepressible tears. When a commercial advertisement announced a twenty-four hour Firefly marathon, the sufficient response had been to ogle Malcolm Reynolds era Nathan Fillion pictures . . . or so I am told. However, when watching the trailer for Whedon’s highly anticipated modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, excitedly jumping up and down on your couch (as if you were Tom Cruise) doesn’t seem like enough.

Let’s look at the facts, shall we?

  • Filmed entirely in black and white – Sophisticated. Cool. Classic.
  • Shot over a twelve day period – Seriously impressive.
  • Includes an array of Whedon regulars – Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, etc.
  • Ultra-modernized version of the Shakespeare classic – I love Kenneth Branagh, but . . .
  • Publicized as a posh, sexy, comedic extravaganza – I just bought my tickets.

Much Ado About Nothing arrives in theatres June 7, 2013.

What did you think of the trailer? Have you read the play? Will you see the movie? Are you excited to see a modernized retelling of the classic? Tell me in the comments!

Must Watch Movie: What a Way to Go!

“Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify! Simplify!”

Source: Google Images

There are films we view in our youth that seem to establish an everlasting impression. Most of the time, these films have spent years creating their own following, easily making themselves a part of the long list of revered classics we devote our time to. However, there are a select few that still remain unknown, that hold a special place amongst our personal favorites, although few know of their striking persona.

We all have that one film in our collection that makes others frown in confusion. “I haven’t even heard of this one!” That makes them curious as to why they’re only finding out about it now. That compels them to be clearly smitten after their first introduction. That makes them silently try to comprehend how it’s been in plain sight all along and they never knew.

What a Way to Go! is that movie.

You need only look at the cast list to understand what I mean.

Shirley MacLaine. Dick Van Dyke. Paul Newman (If you haven’t signed up by this point, I have to question your sanity). Robert Mitchum. Gene Kelly. Dean Martin. Four husbands, one woman desperately searching for the simple life and the epic love story that accompanies it.

Trailer Talk: Beautiful Creatures

It’s magic, you know?

First off, I swear to you, if I had known about this, I would have contacted you about it sooner, because you know this is right up my alley. Of course, the level of impressive marvel is increased with the inclusion of Seven Devils by my pal, Florence. But, that’s neither here nor there. The truth of the matter is, this is one phenomenal trailer, for a film with stupendous potential. How do I know? Well, I might have fangirled a bit when I saw it. That’s all the proof you need, really.

Based on the novel of the same name – by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl – Beautiful Creatures centers around the forbidden love between Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) and Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert). Lena is a witch (Otherwise known as a Caster) and her family doesn’t quite approve of the match. No surprise there. However, time is fleeting for the couple, as Lena must choose between the Light and the Dark before her sixteenth birthday. Others try to influence her and test her commitment – even her Siren cousin, Ridley (Emmy Rossum), and Incubus uncle (Jeremy Irons) – but the real threat is Serafine (Emma Thompson), the deadliest of them all, who will stop at nothing to sway Lena into joining the dark side. As you can see, the two are in for a mess of trouble.

The film arrives in theatres February 14, 2013. Until then, though, I think it’s best if we’re all on the same page. We have a new book to read, don’t we?

What did you think of the trailer? Have you read the novel? Will you see the movie? What was your favorite line? Favorite scene? Love the song? Anyone else notice the easily spotted similarities between this trailer and the first Twilight trailer? Tell me in the comments!

Trailer Talk: Warm Bodies

Written In Reverse

At Kim the Fangirl, we love our fictional characters (Hunters, Hybrids, Vampire soulmates, etc); the sparkling, the romance, the uncomplicated lines of cheesy dialogue. However, if you didn’t already know, we also share a fondness for those impossibly slow-moving, ever so hungry creatures of the living dead. There’s been a lot of talk/hype surrounding our good friend, the zombie, lately – having several feature films, a hit TV show, and whatnot. And yet, I don’t think he’s ever been portrayed in this particular way before. Here’s a guy, who’s just doing what he does best – eating brains – when all of a sudden, he falls in love (with a human, no less). Ever so slowly, as their romance blossoms, things begin to change. Oh, my. He’s becoming human again! And if that wasn’t enough, an evil zombie apocalypse is just around the corner. That’s a lot for one zombie to handle, you have to admit. Arriving in theatres February 1, 2013, Warm Bodies is sure to catch the eye of comedy nerds and zombie lovers everywhere. Will you be watching?

What did you think of the trailer? Have you read the novel? Will you see the movie? Love zombies? What was your favorite line? Tell me in the comments!
