A Much Needed Push: Chapter 1

I’ve posted Chapter 1 of A Much Needed Push in The Writer’s Room. You’ll find it under ‘FanFiction.’

Teaser

Upon my arrival to the diner, my eyes always frantically search for her, for my Bella. It seems like ages until she spots me at my usual table, though it could hardly be more than a few minutes. She notices me staring at her and I quickly cast my eyes down, my crooked smile appearing easily at her recognition.

You want her. You need her.

Her feet make quick work to obtain my order: a cup of coffee and the Special of the Day – a slice of Bella’s signature, freshly baked, homemade pie.

Today’s special had been Dark Chocolate Fudge Banana Cream, made complete with a large dollop of whipped cream on the side; one of my favorites. Bella knew this, as I may have spoken – in great detail – of my love for this exact pie previously to her. Her deep chocolate eyes light up every time I send my compliments. Her smile, genuine and infectious.

A small laugh escaped when I asked her about her latest culinary achievement this afternoon. Her excitement and enjoyment seeped through while she explained the different ingredients, the type of crust that must be selected to perfectly accompany the fresh fruit and cream filling. She waited as I softly cut into the dessert, then placed the sweet decadence onto my awaiting taste buds, tasting and savoring her creation. I heard her giggle, as I then proceed to devour the rest in a few short bites.

     “I’m glad you like it.”

Happy Reading! :D

The Writer’s Room

You must keep sending work out. You must never let a manuscript do nothing but eat its head off in a drawer. You send that work out again and again, while you’re working on another one. If you have talent, you will receive some measure of success – but only if you persist.
-Isaac Asimov

Desk1

A few weeks ago, one of my brilliant readers wondered – after noticing my theatrical flair when it comes to writing vampire based television recaps – if I had or intended to pursue writing fanfiction. Being the avid fanfic reader and hopeful author that I am, of course I had thought about it. In fact, in the weeks previous to her inquiry, I had already started taking down notes for several possible stories that had been rolling around in my head – never intending for others to read my work, only committing to the process for my enjoyment alone. But when she brought it up, I couldn’t help but think, why the hell not? What have I got to lose?

Random Ramblings: Black Friday, Breaking Dawn, and The Host

Three Rants for the Price of One

Black Friday

Black Friday will be here next week. I’m guessing you already knew this, of course. But for you unfortunate fangirls overseas, this is the time of year – the day after our Thanksgiving – when Americans get up at ungodly hours of the morning, and freeze to death waiting in ridiculously long lines, just to grab a bargain or two for things we most likely don’t need.

Don’t look at me like that, it’s tradition, especially in my family.

The sale papers are read weeks ahead of time; plans are made; items listed, highlighted, and circled. It’s all rather tiring, I admit. You rush through the sliding doors, hoping and praying the other thirty or so people ahead of you don’t want the exact same thing as you. You got there early enough, so it shouldn’t be a problem, but the incessant butterflies – from the cold or your upcoming secret mission (No one really knows) – make you determined to throw and elbow or two, if need be.

For film and TV nerds like me, it’s an especially wonderful time of year. TV seasons usually priced at forty dollars or more suddenly transform into ten-dollar deals. Films you’ve been dying to see or have been waiting to add to your overstocked collection follow similarly, prices falling lower than you’ve ever seen before. Clothes. Electronics. Music. Games. Everything you could ever want or need discounted for a reasonable price. It’s a smorgasbord of sales!

FanGirl Addiction: Twilight

“That was the first night I dreamed of Edward Cullen.”

Source: Google Images

It’s been almost four years since I fell in love with this vampire-romance novel and its subsequent sequels. Over the years, my obsession has gone from excessive to fanatical, casual to calm, but never waning. There was a time when you could find me on the forums, elbow-deep in discussion, talking about anything and everything that had to do with Twilight. There were posters, shirts, buttons. I spent hours reading, imagining this extraordinary world. I was a Twilight addict.

I am a Twilight addict.

There was never a choice. It was always Edward (Oh, wait. I think that’s supposed to be Bella’s line). The idea of soul mates – true love – the main idea of the novels, has been the foremost component in my mind as to why I love the series. Nothing can keep them apart. It doesn’t matter if he’s a vampire or she’s a human, they belong together; fate transcends the impossible.

Somewhere along the line I forgot that; distancing myself from the pop culture phenomenon, completely avoiding the movies, instead keeping myself busy with hours upon hours of fanfiction; keeping close to the domain I once knew, but straying from the source. Two years had gone by and I still hadn’t picked up the well-used anthology. A title I read two or three times year was abandoned, cast to the side! All of a sudden, that didn’t sit well with me. I needed to know these characters again. I needed to find that attraction, what had kept me coming back again and again.

The Saga Continues

Hello! This is Kim the FanGirl reporting live from my local movie theatre. I’m just moments away from stepping into the darkened cinema for my first viewing of Breaking Dawn – the fourth movie production of Stephenie Meyer’s beloved series. Fans are shaking with anticipation and excitement. They’re gripping their armrests, waiting for the opening credits to arrive. They’re clutching their Edward collectors cups and muttering something about feathers. They’re starting the film! Squee! Sorry. Here we go. We first see . . .

We interrupt this broadcast with breaking news. We’ve just been told that Team Edward and Team Jacob have actually put aside their differences; and both have agreed to represent Team Renesmee for the film. Sources can neither confirm nor deny these rumors, but fans are demanding to know the truth.

For more on this story, we take you to our special correspondent, Set In Motion. As a fellow TwiHard, FanGirl, and blogger, she was first on the scene to witness the epic romance intensify between Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. Today, she was kind enough to share her review of the film with all of you. Warning! Possible spoilers ahead. Here, take a look at The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Now back to you, Kim!

Um . . . I think I’m going to need a moment here. I can’t even . . . Wow. Okay. Edward. Wow. You know what? I want to hear what you thought of Breaking Dawn. Gather all your thoughts and tell me what you thought of the movie.

What did you think of Breaking Dawn: Part 1? Love it? Hate it? What was your favorite scene? Favorite character? Favorite line? Can’t wait for Part 2? How did it compare to the book? Tell me in the comments!

Cullen. Edward Cullen.

Let the countdown begin!

Attention, Twihard’s! Attention! In approximately 30 (long, infuriating) days, Breaking Dawn: Pt.1 will hit your local cinema. Like you didn’t know. With expectations high, our fellow Twihard community eagerly awaits the chance to, once again, appreciate the story we fell in love with once upon a Twilight (See what I did there?). Despite monotone voice’s of doom (a.k.a. Pale, Sadface Chick), bad wigs (WTF? Carlisle), and bad (screen) writing, deep down there still lies the excitement and optimism we held onto long ago. Right? Right. After all, this is Twilight we’re talking about. All you need to do, is voice a few choice words and we’ll be instantaneously transformed into our original Twilight FanGirl selves. Ahem! Leg hitch. Volvo. Meadow. Feathers. Edward. I told you so. You know I can hear you screaming. Now, to help you fill those long, sleepless nights spent staring into your Edward pillow – dreaming of headboards and feathers – I’ve assembled a little treat for you. With 30 Snapshots of Edward Cullen, you will experience the bronze haired God in all his HQ glory. With a photo-a-day, you will have Edward to keep you company until November 18th. No need to thank me, since this is just an excuse for me to post pretty RPattz pictures. Enjoy!

WARNING! The images you are about to see may cause the following side effects:

1. Robward induced dreams/daydreams (Please proceed with caution. Some instances may be NSFW)

2. Immediate need to abandon work, family, and friends to read copious amounts of lemony fanfiction

3. Incoherent thoughts, drooling, and/or moaning

4. Spontaneous Combustion

Have a good day!

I Can Quote That 2!

I’m the queen of the quotes!

Source: Photobucket

Here we are once again, quoting movies. I just can’t help myself. You know, the last time we found ourselves in this position (I Can Quote That!: 1st Edition), I found the need to bring up my love of cheesy movies lines “Hold on tight, Spider Monkey” and my need to randomly shout out “Squirrel!” or “Lieutenant Dan!” whenever I felt like it. Now I realize, that quoting popular or arbitrary movies is just part of it. What about TV quotes? What about those overused, obnoxious, yet strangely wonderful movie lines that everyone knows and speaks on a constant basis? There is an entire world of movie and TV quotes waiting for us.

So how can I not bring up this movie? This movie that I saw four times in the theatre. This movie that introduced me to Leo. This movie that gave us such a historic line like “I’m the King of the World!”; a line so overused that characters make fun of it in other movies. A line so overused that people feel the need to shout it and stand in a replicated triumphant pose every time they step onto a boat. It’s a classic. Not to mention, the whole movie is abundant in cheesy delicious quotes. “I’ll never let go” Oh, how I love it.

Press Play Friday: The Mitch Hansen Band

“Stupid shiny Volvo owner, I’m so glad to see you here.”

Source: Google Images

This week we saw what happened when Supernatural and Twilight combined. It was amazing, let’s face it. Yet, this wasn’t the first time Twilight fused with another one of my favorite things. If I told you that there was a band  – an awesome band – that makes music dedicated to the Twilight world, what would you say? Well, if you’re not a TwiHard, you’d probably say I was insane. If you’re a Potter fan, you’d probably say Wizard Rock is better. However, if you are a TwiHard, you know I’m talking about The Mitch Hansen Band.

A little over two years ago, I had a newly found obsession in a book series. I was just starting down the Twi road when I heard Number 3. Hearing The Mitch Hansen Band was like completing the circle. There was music to companion the book series. It made sense and it was awesome. When you’re so invested in a series, having a musical reference heightens the reading experience. It made me love the series even more. You know what I’m talking about, Potter fans.

Whether or not you’re a twifan, there is no denying that The Mitch Hansen Band takes their craft seriously. They make amazing music, if it’s about Twilight or not (It’s a choice. Don’t judge). In 2007, their debut album Twilight Hour was released. The all acoustic album focused on the first three books of the series. Songs like Lullaby and A World Without You immediately made TwiHard’s hearts pitter-patter. A mostly literal interpretation of the series, Twilight Hour respectfully paid homage to our favorite characters. One year later, Endless Day came out. Backed with a full band and increased rock sound, The Mitch Hansen Band brought back the songs we loved with some new enhancements.

Supernatural Rewind: “Live Free or TwiHard”

* WARNING! Super FanGirl mode will commence in 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . .

Source: Salted & Burned

I’m trying to be calm, but my inner fangirl is squeeing and jumping, and yelling, and waving her hands in the air. If it isn’t obvious already, on Friday night my favorite series and my favorite show collided. It might not be the way that I wanted – like Sam, Dean, RPattz, Edward Cullen, and me [The following has been edited. The statement is not appropriate for all readers. To see the unedited version please read some fan-fiction. We apologize for the inconvenience.] Wait. I want that to happen in real life. Damn. I keep getting those two confused. – but it still made me squee with delight several, several times.

Only, there is something bigger we have to address. Let’s say it in unison, because we’re all thinking it. “What the hell, Sam?” What the hell? There is no doubting it now, but there is something seriously wrong with our beloved Sammy. In the beginning of the season I had my doubts. We all knew Sam wasn’t the same. He was a little tougher and unwilling to answer questions. However, small moments (Like in Two and a Half Men) made me believe it still was Sam. Now, I’m not so sure. He’s been to hell and back. That is going to change the man.

Despite that, Sammy betrayed the only real family he had. The large smirk on his face as that vampire turned Dean was bone chilling. Is that even Sam? No matter how much crap these two brothers have been through, they always (ALWAYS) come through for one another. Even if he experienced the worst of hell, there is no doubt in my mind that he would never, ever hurt his brother like that intentionally. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s go back to the beginning and see how all this drama started. First, to get the mood going, I think it’s only appropriate to play Supermassive Black Hole in the background. It just seems to fit, doesn’t it?

From Page to Screen

Read this, watch that

Source: Google Images

It’s one of the most highly discussed topics in recent history. It can insight feuds even amongst the closest friends. It is the one question that really doesn’t have a right answer. Which is better? The book? Or the movie?

You’ve heard this discussion too, probably many times. The long hours usually just play out by each side explaining their thinking. Voices get raised and people begin to walk away. In the end, neither side gives up and the topic is unresolved. Does this sound familiar?

The truth is, you really can’t compare the two. They’re two different mediums. Both the book and movie have to be judged separately, because they’re always different. This is what my college minor in film self tells me. In fact, I took a whole class dedicated to the differences between novel and film. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s hard to see it that way.

When any beloved book is turned into a movie, there is always that moment of fright. Will it stay true to the book? What scenes are they going to change? Will it be terrible? It’s a guessing game. If a small amount of the storyline from the book is intact, the film industry see’s it as a successful reimagining of the source material. Which to I say . . . Well I can’t say, because there might be young ears in the room.

Time and time again, I’ve been disappointed in book to movie adaptations. The Da Vinci Code and Twilight seem to be the obvious examples. Both have a blatant disregard for the original novel. Scenes have been added, scenes have been radically changed, and the storylines aren’t parallel to the book. I don’t expect it to be the same (Actually, I do). It can’t be the same. But is it so hard to ask that it stay true to the original source material? I don’t think so.
