Press Play Friday: Songs from the Movies (Disney Edition)

A Whole New World

Source: Google Images

Hi, everybody! Welcome back to another episode of Press Play: Disney Edition. Get ready, because this time, we’re going to the movies. Part two in our series (See Part 1 HERE), focuses on those timeless Disney classics we all loved as a child and still love today. What would our childhood be, if we never spent a Jolly Holiday with Mary or looked for The Second Star to the Right? Would we know all the Colors of the Wind? Would we ever Seize the Day? (Oh, wordplay. I love you.) All of these songs are significant to us in different ways; memories of a time, a place, a feeling. We take them with us, to feel like a kid again, to escape reality for even the smallest of moments. A soundtrack that extends farther than any other, these movie-songs have that signature Disney style; unique to an ever evolving musical society. To tell the truth, Disney music is just, plain and simply, awesome; fun and entertaining. I know you’ll have to agree. This collection is extensive (very extensive), and if we were to list all of my favorites, we’d be here a very, very long time. So today, we’ll be looking at just a handful of these out-standing melodious moments from Disney’s movie history. I’ll give you the important task of telling me all your most-notable moments when we reach the comments. Until then, let’s get this party started!

Under the Sea: Who doesn’t love this song? The calypso beats; the fast-paced rhymes and lyrics. It’s a Disney classic! While Ariel may be wishing to be Part of Your World (Another fantastic piece off the soundtrack, I might add), Sebastian needs her to see all the magic and wonder that lives right under the sea. The Littler Mermaid listens closely as Sebastian & Friends sing with harmonious effort. His pleas are unsuccessful, of course, but that doesn’t stop him from trying. “Just look at the world around you, right here on the ocean floor. Such wonderful things surround you; what more is you lookin’ for?”

I Can Quote That 2!

I’m the queen of the quotes!

Source: Photobucket

Here we are once again, quoting movies. I just can’t help myself. You know, the last time we found ourselves in this position (I Can Quote That!: 1st Edition), I found the need to bring up my love of cheesy movies lines “Hold on tight, Spider Monkey” and my need to randomly shout out “Squirrel!” or “Lieutenant Dan!” whenever I felt like it. Now I realize, that quoting popular or arbitrary movies is just part of it. What about TV quotes? What about those overused, obnoxious, yet strangely wonderful movie lines that everyone knows and speaks on a constant basis? There is an entire world of movie and TV quotes waiting for us.

So how can I not bring up this movie? This movie that I saw four times in the theatre. This movie that introduced me to Leo. This movie that gave us such a historic line like “I’m the King of the World!”; a line so overused that characters make fun of it in other movies. A line so overused that people feel the need to shout it and stand in a replicated triumphant pose every time they step onto a boat. It’s a classic. Not to mention, the whole movie is abundant in cheesy delicious quotes. “I’ll never let go” Oh, how I love it.

Repeat Viewings: What Movies Can You Watch Over And Over Again?

Let’s watch that again!

Source: Photobucket

I’m sitting here watching The Hangover for about the 30th time. Why? I don’t know. But, every time it pops up on that T.V guide, I have to watch it. No question about it. It never gets old. Seeing Phil get tased. Listening to Doug’s song. It has to be watched, sometimes twice in one day. And since it’s been on T.V a whole lot lately, multiple viewings are inevitable.

There are a lot of movies that make my ‘must-watch-at-least-a-dozen-times-or-more’ list. Though, they usually don’t start out that way. It usually beings with a love-hate relationship. You watch it, love it, but put it away for a few months, maybe longer. Then someone brings it up again after it starts playing on cable. At that point, the cable station requires the movie be played at least 10 times a day. You casually take your time to watch it, and realize after that you really like this movie. So, maybe the next time you watch it, because nothing is on. The next time you watch, you’re bored. By this time, it’s embedded into your ‘I will watch this because it’s the only thing on’ way of thinking. There’s no hope for you after that. The next time it’s on, a few months later, you’ll watch it again and again.

Does this sound familiar? Of course it does. I see it happen all the time. It happens constantly. So what other movies do I have to watch repeatedly? Well, I just have to watch Forrest Gump when it’s on. Besides, it’s one of my favorite movies to quote. How can I not? Up, of course. The Goonies, definitely. It’s a classic. Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead, I have to watch at least every couple of months. I watch White Christmas over 10 times during the holiday season. The list is endless.

We watch the movies we love. We watch movies we really like. We watch movies. It’s life. I guess if we didn’t watch our favorite movies at least a few hundred times, they wouldn’t be our favorite movies.

Now dear readers, what movies do you watch over and over again? Start the discussion in the comments! I’ll see you there.

I Can Quote That!

Today we’re quoting some movies!

We’ve all done it. We all know how it feels; to find the precise moment where we can take that semi-useless piece of movie knowledge and apply it to some random conversation or situation. Now, to a movie lover, this yearning to randomly quote movies is almost a constant feeling. I can’t tell you how many times the urge has come over me. Sometimes this feeling comes at inappropriate times, so I just shout them out in my head and laugh at my own stupid joke. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Lately, I’ve been quoting along with the movie, much to the dismay of my family and friends. The truth is, quoting movies is fun. You know it too. Because, how can you not say “Not you, fat Jesus,” every time you see Zach Galifinanakis? Or think of, “I’m the king of the world!” when you see Leonardo DiCaprio? Exactly. You can’t.

One of my favorite movies to quote is Up. The precise sum of how many times I’ve said “Squirrel!” in the past year is incalculable. The precise total of how many times I have recited Russell’s opening monologue is also incalculable. In fact, I can quote that entire movie right now if asked . . . “Good Afternoon. My name is Russell. And I’m a Wilderness Explorer in tribe 54, sweat lodge 12. Are you in need of any assistance today, sir?” I could go on . . . “My name is Dug” . . . and on  . . . But it’s a talking dog!” . . . and on, but I’ll stop here. I’ve probably just lost half of my audience. Oh, well. Let’s continue.

Wait! There’s More After The Cut!
