In 1937, A Star Is Born premiered with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in the roles Esther Blodgett and Norman Maine. The story detailed the tragic journey of two Hollywood darlings, one whose career was just beginning and the other whose stardom was fading. In 1954, Judy Garland and James Mason took over, yielding what can honestly be called one of the greatest musicals of all time. Twenty two years later, it was Barbra Streisand’s turn. She brought the well-known story into the modern age, making significant modifications to the story’s plot. Earning two Academy Awards for music, the film’s soundtrack is still considered to be one of the all-time best. A Star Is Born is one of those stories we all know by heart. After three incredible incarnations, I’m sure the question you’re all asking is, “DO WE NEED ANOTHER REMAKE?”
Well, probably not, but at this point in time it feels like a right of passage, for another generation to take on the story and make it their own. This time Bradley Cooper is in the driver’s seat, not only starring in the film, but also taking writing and directing credit. Like Streisand, Cooper’s film will be set in the music industry, with Lady Gaga appearing as Ally, a struggling musician. The trailer, which debuted yesterday, is absolutely stunning. It’s truly surprising, even for skeptics, like me. I just want to watch the trailer again and again. Right off the bat, you’re awestruck by Copper’s singing talent. Who knew he could sing like that? Gaga, on the other hand, is bright-eyed and seemingly more naive in her portrayal than her predecessors. It’s clear that this film is going to be darker than the rest, but the trailer mixes the impending pain with brief spotlights of hope. There is no question about it, this film is definitely going to be a must-see.
A Star Is Born arrives in theatres October 5th, 2018.
