Long story long, this poem has gone through many iterations over the five plus years I’ve been trying to complete it. Up until this morning, I’d been seriously stuck with only two ideal verses and a pretty much nothing else. It was a unfinished concept that had been sitting in my drafts folder, wistfully waiting for the day when I would rescue it from historic isolation and set it free. Truthfully, I never thought we’d ever ride off into the sunset together. Our separation was a done deal, but those two verses wouldn’t go away. They would scream at me during random moments of my life, including the time I was trying to write a short story about the incredibly vivid dreams I’d been having featuring my very own sleep paralysis demon. Cue that flashing light bulb over my head! Whatever I’d been able to write about my demon was very flowery and poetic right off the bat, so it really was an easy decision to marry the two seemingly similar tales into one cohesive vision. And I’m so glad I did. Hymns for my Sleep Paralysis Demon is the type of weird, romantic, gothic plot I can’t get enough of. Plus, you gotta love that title.
