I looked at her as if she were crazy. Was what I was doing so unimaginable? After so many years together, had she not seen this often enough? Had she not repeatedly bear witness to my uncontrollable, yet perfectly understandable, reaction to any of those half-wits trying to lay claim to what was rightfully mine?
She wasn’t even trying to hide her infidelity anymore. She had come home and immediately embraced me, not caring if I could smell his smeared stench from the tip of her nose to the bottom of her boot. His cheap dime-store cologne was easily spotted, since I knew what I was looking for. I didn’t even let her explain before I made my move.
“Charlie! How could you?”
She was looking at me now with anything but an impressed sense of gratitude. I thought it was a rather fine achievement. I truly had outdone myself.
“What have you done?”
I had done exactly what I had set out to do. I retaliated. I showed her exactly what would happen if she ever were unfaithful to me again.
She didn’t need to bring home any of those bouncy, bubbly young pups who were only after a quick stroke or two. I was all she’d ever need and it was a shame she couldn’t see that.
“I can’t believe this!”
She ran down the steps, from the upstairs bedroom to the downstairs kitchen, trying to erase the damage I had done. I situated myself stoically at the top of the stairs, watching with amusement as she slipped and began to slide on the hardwood floor, quickly hoping to mend what was sure to be an irreparable plight.
I snickered under my breath, knowing she could not hear me.
“Charlie!” She yelled again.
I refused to answer. Why would I?
“You’re in so much trouble.”
She ascended the stairs as I pushed my head down, making her believe I was, at least, somewhat remorseful, though the opposite was true. Looking up at her with my big brown eyes, her features slowly began to soften, but turned furious when she looked at what she held in her left hand.
“Bad dog. You’re a very bad dog!”
So, I peed in her shoe. Big whoop.
She deserved what she got. She was mine and she needed to be reminded.
It was the only way. How would she ever learn?
