As you know, it’s rare for me to tell you about a new show right away. I’m always late to the party, usually discovering shows when they’re in the second or sixth season. Sadly, I’m not very good at watching a show as soon as it comes out. I’m a bit of a procrastinator that way. However, when I saw the advertisement for Everything’s Gonna Be Okay on FreeForm a few weeks ago, I knew it going to be a show that I needed to discuss with you immediately. I was right, of course. When the series debuted its first two episodes on Thursday, I was hooked instantaneously. It’s quite easy to understand why. Everything’s Gonna Be Okay is the magnificent brainchild of Josh Thomas. I’ll forgive you if the name doesn’t sound familiar, but I will be extremely upset with you if you haven’t seen his other brilliant and revolutionary series, Please Like Me. That is just unforgivable. Thomas is the creator and star of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, and just like Please Like Me, he steals the show entirely.
The series centers around Nicholas (Thomas) and his two half-sisters as they try to cope after their father’s untimely death. This imperfect family must forge their own path as they navigate love, autism, grief, family, and growing up. The way Thomas balances his signature, fast-paced quips and the intense pain of loss is remarkable. That dizzying mix of comedy and crisis personifies the realities we face everyday in life. Thomas’ writing style is truly unique. It’s one of those shows where you’re either laughing or crying.
We’re only two episodes in to this fantastic, freshman series, so there’s plenty of time for you to catch up. Get to it! This is a show you won’t want to miss.
See you tomorrow!
