There is a channel on YouTube called REACT, where teenagers and college students are quizzed on different artists, genres, and songs from various decades. I don’t think it’s meant to make people of a certain age feel old, but when they can’t recognize Ace of Base or Lisa Loeb, you can’t help but feel like you’re getting on in years. Their lack of nineties knowledge is particularly disturbing. Watching them confuse *NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys is totally cringe-worthy. Being unable to identify popular tracks from artists like Blues Traveler, Jewel, and Matchbox Twenty is completely unforgivable. They didn’t even know who B*Witched was! Although these young people may be clueless when it comes to the musicians you and I have grown up with, their naivety is surprisingly entertaining. It’s quite addicting. Once you see one of these unscripted but structured videos, you’ll find yourself spending hours digging through the channel’s other playlists and history. You’ll be stuck in a REACT loop. You’ll be trying to figure out if you know it too.
