Press Play: Classic Rock – Supernatural Style

3 more days until the season 6 premiere of Supernatural!

We continue Supernatural Premiere Week with a very special Press Play. Music plays an intricate part in this show. And if there is one thing that Supernatural has taught us over the years is that 1. Never trust a Demon 2. Always bring the salt 3. Classic rock is the soundtrack to our lives.

What is Supernatural without classic rock? Well, if you watched the show, you would know that it would be just two dudes running around chasing demons, crying a little with just some scary music behind them. And that’s not Supernatural. Classic rock is a way of life to these characters. Listening to Zeppelin, Metallica; basically anything on cassette tape. Classic rock has become part of why we love the show. So we’re going to celebrate that with some of the most memorable classic rock songs in Supernatural history.

Sam: …I swear man; you gotta update your cassette tape collection.

Dean: Why?

Sam: Well for one they are cassette tapes, and two— {Pulls out a few cassette tapes} Black Sabbath? Motorhead? Metallica? It’s the greatest hits of mullet rock.

Dean: {Grabs a cassette from Sam and pops it in the player} House rules, Sammy. Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cake hole.

In the episode entitled “Bloodlust” we see out favorite boys, Sam and Dean driving along in the Impala. Their on another case. This time, hunting vampires. The song playing in the background: Back in Black by AC/DC. Now, I don’t know what it is about Supernatural and this song. They just seem to fit perfectly together. It’s become a fan favorite.

Up next, a song and scene that is probably the most memorable among Supernatural fans. Seriously, if you don’t fall in love with Jensen Ackles or Dean Winchester from this scene . . . what is wrong with you? (I kid). This is Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. On air guitar: Jensen Ackles.

One song that I think makes the entire fandom cry is Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas. In each beginning of a season ending episode, this song plays as we look back to see people we’ve lost, things we’ve done, and how awesome we are. I mean . . . people the boys have lost, things the boys have done, and how awesome the boys are. It’s not like a feel any attachment to these characters. That would be crazy (Insert fangirl sarcasm here).

Bonus: Bon Jovi does rock . . . on occasion. This is Sam and Dean singing Wanted Dead or Alive from the episode “No Rest For the Wicked.” Love this.

Supernatural Fan Trivia: Which song is Dean’s favorite?

Answer: A tie between Led Zeppelin’s “Ramble On” and “Traveling Riverside Blues”

  1. Julia Smith says:

Hey Kim – found your blog when I was scrolling through Supernatural stuff on the web. My favorite tracks from the show so far have been:

    Rush – Working Man
Blue Oyster Cult – Don’t Fear the Reaper
    CCR – Bad Moon Rising
    Muse – Supermassive Black Hole
The Animals – House of the Rising Sun
Frank Sinatra – I’ve Got the World on a String
Bon Jovi – Wanted Dead or Alive
    The Kinks – Well-Respected Man
The Who – Won’t Get Fooled Again

Of course, I’ve now developed a marked fondness for Carry On My Wayward Son…

    1. I love all those too! There is such great music on the show. I can’t wait to see what music moments are coming for us this season. “Carry On My Wayward Son,” I know, every time I hear that song, all I can think about is Supernatural and The Road So Far. This show has ruined that song for me . . . in a good way. 😉
