Discovery Monday: Supernatural

Lay down that salt ring, it’s Supernatural premiere week!

Whether you’re a fan, or soon will be (*wink*), there are only 4 more days until the season 6 premiere of Supernatural!

You’re free to fangirl now.

While it may be no surprise that I would dedicate a whole week to the season premiere of Supernatural, it is a surprise that there are still people not watching this amazing show. So for all you soon to be fans, for this Discovery Monday I’m going to let you in on the best secret in television since 2005. This is Supernatural. Cue the classic rock!

Premiering on September 13th (2005), and created by [Fearless Leader] Eric Kripke, Supernatural is the story of brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. Throughout this soon to be 6 year journey, we travel with the boys in their 1967 Chevy Impala across the country fighting monsters, demons, urban legends, and whatever other creepy, sometimes previously dead creatures they can find.

Sounds like the making of a serious drama. But, sometimes I don’t think that’s the case. Over the past 5 seasons of TV I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in my life. Of course there are plenty of rip-your-heart-out-cry-until-the-end-of-time moments. After all, it can’t be all rainbows and sunshine in the hunter world.

Supernatural is a cult classic. The characters are complex, well-written, and well-acted. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s entertaining, it has everything you want in a series. But, it’s more than just two guys hunting demons. The relationships are the real force behind the show. Bobby (Jim Beaver), Pretty-boy Angel Castiel (Misha Collins), and so much more take the show above and beyond.

From genuine horror, to tons of family drama, to love, to pure hilarity, Supernatural is one of the best and most underrated shows in TV history. Alright, I may be a little biased. I’ll admit it. But, the only way to find out for yourself is to go watch it right now. Seriously, right now. Stop reading and go. Watch. I’ll understand. Okay. I’ll start you off with a little background to get you interested.

Then: After their mother Mary is killed by the demon Azazel (Or Yellow Eyes) when Sam is just a baby, their father John sets out on an obsessive journey to find her killer. To keep the two safe, John teaches them everything they need to know about surviving in the supernatural world. He brings them into the “family business.”

Now: No way. I’m not giving away any spoilers. You’ll have to find out for yourself. Seasons 1-5 now available on DVD.

Season 6 begins on September 24th, 2010 at 8pm CT on the CW.

In honor of the season 6 premiere, TNT is hosting a 15 hour Supernatural marathon on September 24, starting at 4am CT (WOOT!). Be sure to watch!

We continue Supernatural Premiere Week tomorrow with a special edition of Press Play.

See you tomorrow! – Kim
