With so much quality TV being made these days, it can be downright impossible to binge-watch all those must-watch series you hear about. Of course, you’ve seen the most popular of the clan. The Crown. Stranger Things. Etc. Now, you don’t know what you should watch next. There’s just too much to choose from! Not to mention, a plethora of platforms to subscribe to. Hulu. Amazon. Netflix. The list goes on and on. There is no possible way for someone to get through it all. Luckily, you have me. I’ve sorted through a long list of exceptional shows and picked the best among them. These are the ones you may have missed or never even heard of. These are the ones that are guaranteed to become fast favorites. These are the Top Five TV Shows You Should Be Watching.
5. Everything Sucks!
It may seem like your typical high school comedy at first, but Everything Sucks! creatively defies expectations. It’s heartwarming and a touching tribute to a well-loved genre. The story is pretty straightforward, but tackles friendships and first loves with its own distinct approach. It’s all about the details. Everything Sucks! is a beautifully written love letter to the 1990’s. From the killer soundtrack to the fashion, this show will make you nostalgic for the good old days. Despite its recent cancellation, the passion and dedication from its cast and creators will, undoubtedly, cause this short-lived series to be remembered as a beloved hit.
Everything Sucks! is available to watch on Netflix.
4. The Bold Type
I was not prepared for how much I would love The Bold Type and you won’t be either. It’s one of those shows that can sometimes border between ridiculous and amazing, but whatever cringe-worthy material there is disappears in the blink of an eye. Don’t think that just because this show centers around a trio of friends working at a fashion magazine it’s all about high-end clothes and swanky celebrity parties. The Bold Type is a powerful series about powerful women. Sure, they’re trying to navigate between their careers and their interesting love lives. However, the show thrives when the characters conquer complicated obstacles and fears, when they are able to create their own feminist victories. It inspires the audience to do the same. The second season of The Bold Type will debut in just a couple of months, so there is more than enough time to catch up on everything you’ve missed.
The Bold Type will return to FreeForm on June 12th.
3. Legion
I know the last thing you need right now is another superhero saga clogging up your queue, but Legion is genuinely special. It takes the superhero game to the next level. Trust me, you haven’t seen anything like it before. Following the life of David Haller (Dan Stevens), the series explores the trials and tribulations of what it means to be a mutant. Although its roots are in the X-Men universe, Legion breaks out of that strict style with a visually impressive and delightfully kooky twist. You’ll likely find yourself equally befuddled and awed by its unique story and style, but Legion will undeniably keep you on the edge of your seat. You never know what will happen next.
You can watch Season 1 of Legion on FX and Hulu.
2. Santa Clarita Diet
Guts and gore. Hilarious one-liners and a dysfunctional, but loving family. In its two short seasons, Santa Clarita Diet has quickly become one of the funniest shows around. The show effortlessly juggles between dark humor and eerie drama, while also tending to the emotional family dynamic quite frequently. You’ll laugh until your sides hurt, but there will be times when you will feel your heart clench from a sweet mixture of sadness and happiness. The series manages to blend the two so nicely, you tend to forget you just saw a man being ripped into bloody, little pieces. What do you expect when the main character is a zombie? Drew Barrymore stars as the aforementioned member of the living dead. Yet, it’s Timothy Olyphant – co-staring as Joel, Sheila’s husband – who steals absolutely every scene that he’s in. Olyphant is a comedic genius. His performance is second to none. The zombie trend may be on the way out, but I hope this show lasts for a long time.
Santa Clarita Diet is available to watch on Netflix.
1. The Magicians
The Magicians is one of those shows that is equally weird and wonderful, and even after three seasons it still has the ability to surprise. You never know where you’ll end up with The Magicians. One episode can transform from the fantastically bizarre to the downright silly, from lighthearted romance to “Oh, this is some heavy s#!t.” The range of themes and genres this series goes through is truly impressive. (Loosely) based on Lev Grossman’s trilogy, The Magicians detail the journey of a group of apprentice magicians as they attend Brakebills University. What follows is an unfathomable quest into fantasy, tragedy, and peril. The comparisons between The Magicians and Harry Potter are abundant, but unfounded. Actually, the series most resembles a darker, sexier, stranger, quirkier version of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Although, I hate to compare it to that. The Magicians is its own unique brand of crazy. That’s what makes the show so addictive, so memorable. It’s a show you should definitely be watching.
You can watch Seasons 1 & 2 of The Magicians on Netflix.
