Florence + The Machine “Sky Full Of Song”

“Grab me by my ankles, I’ve been flying for too long. I couldn’t hide from the thunder in a sky full of song.”

Here we are, together again. Reunited and it feels so good! We all knew this day was fast approaching, but it still came as a shock. After all, the anticipation was so sweet. She didn’t tell us she was coming. She just showed up at our door and bestowed upon us another unforgettable tune. I can’t get it out of my mind! Florence never does what you’d expect and this time is no different. She has, once again, reinvented herself and her sound, while still staying true to her roots.

Sky Full Of Song is so real and raw. The lyrics are like a powerful grip on your heart. You will never be the same again. Every time you hear it. Every time it circles around in your head you get this feeling, this tender blend of melancholy and regret. It completely overwhelms you. It sets a mood. Florence’s ability to perfectly embody these deep, incredibly personal emotions in her music is utterly astounding. The melody is haunting. Yet, the arrangement is so simple. A soft jingle of a bell. A pluck of a string. It’s breathless and bare, but when combined with Florence’s passionate pleas they plunge you into a wave of endless intensity.

The black and white video that accompanies the song is entirely minimalistic, with only a few scattered props to accompany Florence. She lies on a white, wooden floor as flowers in dirt grow from her hands. They grow all around her. She kneels over a basin of water to wash away her sins, to wash away the pain. She prays for peace, respite from the rain. She looks up, up, up. The only way is up. The video’s intimate feel amplifies Florence’s words and her whispers. It doesn’t distract you from what she is saying. It brings you closer to her and to the song.

We still have no idea when Florence + The Machine’s upcoming fourth album will be announced, but expect to see something within the next month or so. For now, all we can do is bask in this brief break in the clouds and wait for sunshine to return.

“THIS WAS A SONG THAT JUST FELL OUT OF THE SKY FULLY FORMED. SOMETIMES WHEN YOU ARE PERFORMING YOU GET SO HIGH, IT’S HARD TO KNOW HOW TO COME DOWN. THERE IS THIS FEELING OF BEING CRACKED OPEN, RUSHING ENDLESSLY OUTWARDS AND UPWARDS, AND WANTING SOMEBODY TO HOLD YOU STILL, BRING YOU BACK TO YOURSELF. IT’S AN INCREDIBLE, CELESTIAL, BUT SOMEHOW LONELY FEELING.” (Source)
